Slonina, 18, has joined Chelsea from MLS side Chicago Fire in a deal the Evening Standard claim is worth £12million. He has penned a contract until the summer of 2028, and is likely to be the club’s third-choice goalkeeper.
- Newcastle and Tottenham want Leeds star, but Elland Road is his best move
- Robin Koch an unsung hero at right-back in Leeds’ final games of 21/22
That could of course change, if Kepa Arrizabalaga does end up leaving Stamford Bridge before the end of the transfer window. It comes after an impressive stint of form with Fire, clocking up 34 appearances and keeping 14 clean sheets.
Yet to win a senior USA cap, Slonina has been called-up to the USA squad and a first cap is certainly forthcoming. He has already endeared himself to the Chelsea support by telling fans he has just joined the best club in London.
Best club in London: Slonina has joined Chelsea
Looking at the Premier League table from last season, it is clear that Chelsea right now boast the London crown. But this season, will they finish above their North London rivals and West Ham? It has been a summer of change.
Big players have left – Andreas Christensen, Romelu Lukaku and Antonio Rudiger. Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling have come in. But the Blues will need to gel quickly to maintain last season’s level of performance.
Arsenal have been excellent in the window but they will have to find a balance given they are in the Europa League. Tottenham are certainly on the up, and they have also had a good window. Chelsea are the best, but it is under threat.
Whether Slonina can impact Chelsea’s pursuit of finishing above their London rivals remains to be seen. But he will certainly start off as third-choice goalkeeper, establishing himself probably in the Under-23 side initially.
