A video was released showing Parham pouring gasoline over the vehicle before it exploded.
Michigan native Sydney Parham, 28, went viral afterwards a video of how she set fire to her boyfriend’s jeep after she allegedly caught her boyfriend cheating and decided to set his jeep on fire.
Firefighters were called to find the car fully aflame in the parking lot of the San Remo apartment complex around 8am on July 22, 2022.
Video obtained by authorities showed Parham pouring petrol on the car before using a stick lighter to ignite the fire, which exploded in her face and sent her flying backwards.
Parham was arrested later in the day and arrested and charged with arson on July 24 and held on $20,000 personal bail.
She pled guilty to charges of arson, which is a misdemeanor, in a May 2021 trial. She was originally charged with third-degree arson, which could have resulted in a 10-year sentence.
Instead, she was sentenced to 18 months probation as part of her pleading for the arson charge.
Claims online had claimed that Parham caught her boyfriend cheating and decided to set fire to his Jeep as a result.
However, when the Jeep’s owner, Avery Stevenson, went to the impounded property to see what was left of his Jeep, he told ClickonDetroit that he knew Parham but was not her boyfriend.
He told the outlet he didn’t know what Parham’s motive might be.
Stevenson said his daughter’s belongings were destroyed in the fire and divided a video of the remains of the jeep with Fox2News posted on Twitter.
The video’s caption read: “The owner of the jeep says he knew the woman who did this, but it wasn’t his girlfriend, in a viral video that has set fire to social media. He gave us this video of the charred remains… RIP jeep.”
Authorities pursued Parham to her Fraser home after residents of the apartment complex described her and shared video of her setting the Jeep on fire.
Parham was seen leaving her home later that day and was arrested during a traffic stop with the help of Roseville Police Department and taken to the Macomb County Jail.
Tenants said they were shocked by the explosion that rocked their complex that morning.
Jerome Doster, who lived in the complex, told Fox2News: “I was at a loss for words, I couldn’t believe this was happening.”
However, tenant Nia Ashford and her boyfriend Sydney Pearson told Fox2News they were not aware of the fire until they saw the video posted online.
“I don’t think that was necessary, she blew her mind,” Ashford said, adding that she just “thought it would go viral.”
Pearson said: “I said it looks like it could be our complex. We joked about it.”
Doster told the outlet, “Someone could have been killed.”
