Cedric Soares is a major doubt to face Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s north London derby after the defender sustained a hip injury during Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg.
That’s according to football.london, who claim Mikel Arteta will give the Portuguese ace as long as possible to recover. The Gunners boss will let club staff monitor his pain levels, but faces a game-day decision on the right-back’s involvement.
Cedric sustained the injury just seconds into Arsenal’s draw at Liverpool on Thursday night. He initially needed treatment after an innocuous collision while challenging for possession in the air. Medical staff then returned to the field on 10-minutes before his withdrawal.
Calum Chambers entered the action at Anfield in place of Cedric, and Arteta may now need to start the Englishman. Cedric missing the north London derby through injury could leave Arsenal without nine first-team players away to rivals Tottenham.
Martin Odegaard was already likely out, while Granit Xhaka saw red on Merseyside. Emile Smith Rowe and Takehiro Tomiyasu are also carrying knocks, while Thomas Partey, Nicolas Pepe, Mohamed Elneny and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Arteta faces injury nightmare if Cedric missing for Arsenal in north London derby
Arteta will be hoping Arsenal’s medical team pass Cedric fit following his injury in time for the north London derby. The 30-year-old, who Gilberto Silva once called ‘fantastic’, is the Spaniard’s second-choice right-back behind Tomiyasu.
Chambers produced a very respectable performance as the emergency stand-in at Anfield, though. So, he will likely get the nod if the Gunners have any doubts over Cedric’s injury.
Chambers was solid in the air, always alert and battled away in what was only his first game since October. He has also only featured in one of Arsenal’s last 17 Premier League squads.
Yet Arteta will remember the horror-show Chambers endured at right-back at Brentford in August. The Bees regularly beat the natural centre-half with far too much ease, was poor in the air and offered little in attack. Tottenham would look to exploit those same failings.
