F1 qualifying results: Starting grid for Qatar Grand Prix 2021 as Lewis Hamilton blitzes Max Verstappen
Lewis Hamilton overcame a stomach bug to secure pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix with a remarkable qualifying lap to crush his title rival Max Verstappen by almost half a second.

Hamilton, trailing Verstappen by 14 championship points heading into the third-last grand prix weekend of the season, delivered the perfect lap in Q3 to secure a 102nd career pole.

“That last lap was beautiful. It was a really sweet lap,” said the Brit.

“Yesterday was a really difficult day as I wasn’t feeling too well, so I struggled throughout FP1 and FP2. I had to dig deep, I was here until midnight last night working with the engineers. We found a lot of areas where we could improve.”

Verstappen job made more difficult

The 1:20.827 lap time testament to what has been a successful weekend for Mercedes so far in Qatar. The Silver Arrows dominated Friday’s practice sessions and were both three tenths of a second ahead of Verstappen in FP3 earlier on Saturday.

Verstappen did hit back in part during qualifying with a well-disciplined flying lap himself to split Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

Challenging Hamilton one-on-one is hard enough but when the Brit has a team-mate in Bottas to rely on, Verstappen really needs his own sidekick to support him.

But Sergio Perez couldn’t deliver. The Mexican has endured a mixed season as Red Bull’s secondary driver but, having initially struggled to support Verstappen at the start of the year, has since come good and nailed a string of podiums.

Yet Saturday was a setback for both Perez and, perhaps more importantly, Verstappen in the Dutchman’s plans for F1 domination.

Perez dipped out in Q2 despite switching onto the soft compound tyre. Errors in his flying lap – in particular not using the full extent of Qatar’s wide track – saw him qualify 11th.
