The club announced their decision on Tuesday. So, let’s meet the two dog breeds and find more about their personality traits.
Meet Mudi Dog
Mudi Dog is a medium-sized dog from Hungary which has been around since the 19th century.
According to AKC, they are “extremely versatile, intelligent, alert, agile” and a “loyal protector” to the family without being overly aggressive.
They are also playful, energetic and enthusiastic when a task needs to be done, the club adds in the dog’s description.
Many Mudi dogs can be found in Hungary, Finland and parts of US, Canada and the rest of Europe.
Meet Russian Toy Dog
The Russian Toy Dog was developed from small English terriers and goes back to the Russian aristocracy since the early 1700s.
They are small, elegant, have long legs and fine bones, and usually don’t weigh more than 6.5 pounds (2.7 kg).
As per AKC, the dog is “active and cheerful, possessing keen intelligence and a desire to please” and loves to “be close to their human companions, although sometimes slightly aloof to strangers”.
The Russian Toy requires more care and grooming because of its long hair.

The dogs have been added to American Kennel Club
The two dog breeds are the latest addition to the American Kennel Club’s family.
AKC is the US purebred dog registry which recognises 199 breeds and acts as the body for official dog shows in the country.
AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo said: “We’re thrilled to have two unique breeds join the registry.
“The Mudi, a medium-sized herding dog, makes a great pet for an active family committed to keeping this worker busy, and the small, loving Russian Toy thrives on being close to its humans, making a wonderful companion for an owner who can be with the dog a great deal.”
DiNardo added: “As always, we encourage people to do their research to find the right breed for their lifestyle.”
