Aston Villa are close to agreeing a transfer with AS Roma to acquire Robin Olsen on loan for the remainder of the season and strengthen manager Steven Gerrard’s goalkeeper options.

That’s according to TuttoMercatoWEB, who report Olsen is set to end his season-long stay at Sheffield United to join Villa. The Swedish shot-stopper joined the Blades back in August. But he has not featured for the Championship outfit in any competition since November 6.

Olsen had established himself as the number-one at Bramall Lane soon after joining under Slavisa Jokanovic. The 32-year-old opened 11 of their 12 second-tier fixtures following his arrival. Yet has not even featured in a matchday squad since losing at Blackburn Rovers.

Wes Foderingham has re-overtaken Olsen as Sheffield United’s first-choice in goal in recent weeks. He has also recorded four clean sheets in the Blades’ last five league games since Olsen played at Ewood Park. The Roma loanee only had one shut out over 11 outings.

Aston Villa have now moved to capitalise on Olsen’s situation at Sheffield United to agree a loan transfer with Roma. The 53-cap international will remain in England for the remainder of the season on the Villans’ books. But the Villa Park natives will not obtain a buy clause.

A deal between the Giallorossi and Gerrard’s side for Olsen’s temporary arrival is imminent. Villa have agreed they will not include an option to purchase the goalkeeper this summer.

Aston Villa sealing smart loan transfer for Roma goalkeeper Olsen

Aston Villa turned to striking a deal with Roma to take over Sheffield United’s arrangement for Olsen after failing to seal a loan transfer for West Ham’s Darren Randolph. Additionally, Fabrizio Romano reports the Villans have already agreed to personal terms with the Swede.

Olsen will arrive at Villa Park to provide Gerrard with an upgrade on his current backups to Emiliano Martinez. Despite an underwhelming stay at Bramall Lane, the Malmo-native can prove a smart addition. He particularly showed his worth during Euro 2020 last summer.

Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak and Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof were full of praise for Olsen after holding Spain to a draw with an outstanding display.

Isak called his efforts ‘absolutely incredible’, via The Guardian, while Lindelof added: “He was fantastic, he saved us. I am going to give him a big hug and say thank you.”
