Trippier, 31, has made no secret of his desire to return to the Premier League – having won the La Liga title with Atletico Madrid last season. Newcastle have won the race, Fabrizio Romano saying a deal “sealed”.
With Atleti losing their first-choice right-back, replacements are already being drawn up by Diego Simeone. Earlier this week, Chelsea veteran Cesar Azpilicueta is supposedly an option – with his contract ending in 2022.
But now, Marca report that Azpilicueta has been joined on Atleti’s shortlist by Wolves and Portugal star Semedo. The 28-year-old has been first choice since joining Wolves in 2020, clocking up 53 outings in all competitions.
Semedo contract might see Wolves sell, as Newcastle eye Trippier
The ex-Barcelona man has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Wolves. Having penned a three-year deal at Wolves, he will need to sign a new deal soon – or Wolves will have two windows to obtain a fee for him.
While he has been steady during his 53 outings, he has hardly proved to Wolves fans that he was worthy of previously wearing a Barcelona shirt – or costing north of £25million. Perhaps, he is better suited to Spanish football.
A move to Atletico Madrid might suit both club and player, then. Wolves can bring in some cash for the defender if he is unwilling to sign a contract – and Semedo can return to a league in which he has starred in before.
