Torino could sell Gleison Bremer for just £6.5 million next year with Premier League giants Liverpool joining AC Milan and Inter in the race for the Serie A stopper, as reported by Calciomercato.
Despite boasting an array of centre-backs most top-flight clubs could only dream of – England international Joe Gomez has played just 13 minutes of league football this season in case you hadn’t noticed – it seems that defensive reinforcements are still rather high on Liverpool’s agenda.
A shock swoop for Chelsea’s contract-dodging colossus Antonio Rudiger was suggested earlier this week – much to the frustration of those who have come to love his rampaging, marauding forwards bursts at Stamford Bridge.
Bremer, at least in contrast to a Germany international with over 100 Premier League appearances under his belt, would arrive at Anfield as something of an unknown quantity.
But it should not be forgotten that few on Merseyside had heard of Joel Matip either when he arrived on a free transfer in 2016 and, after five years of confounding critics and lifting trophies, the former Schalke ace deserves to go down as one of the most inspired signings in Liverpool’s modern history.
Given Michael Edwards’ track record in the transfer market, who’s to say we won’t be talking about Bremer in similarly glowing terms come 2026?
Could Bremer be an inspired Liverpool signing?
According to Calciomercato, one of the most reliable central defenders in Italian football may be available for as little as £6.5 million with less than two years remaining on his contract.
Radio Itatiaia reported earlier this week that Liverpool had made contact with Bremer’s agent regarding a potential switch to Merseyside.
Italian giants Inter and AC Milan are interested too and the 24-year-old did his burgeoning reputation no harm at all with a typically rock-solid display during Torino’s narrow 1-0 defeat at the San Siro on Tuesday night.
Bremer also managed to outshine Romelu Lukaku in a tightly-fought encounter with Serie A champions Inter a few months ago – and you can count on one hand the amount of defenders who managed to do that last season.
With Matip, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Gomez already fighting for just two spots in Klopp’s XI, however, it’s hard to imagine another central defender arriving at Anfield without someone else making way first.
Gomez, apparently fearful of his place in England’s 2022 World Cup plans, may be the most likely candidate to depart (90Min).
