Celtic believe they already have their next number one after Joe Hart at the club in teenage star Tobi Oluwayemi, who The Athletic note has impressed some senior players in training.
The Bhoys signed Oluwayemi from Tottenham Hotspur’s academy in the summer of 2019 on a three-year contract. Nick Hammond sought to snap up the London-born shot-stopper as part of his drive to acquire promising youngsters during his spell as Head of Recruitment.
Oluwayemi showed enough promise in his first two-years for Celtic to extend his contract until 2024 this June. His deal now expires at the same time as Hart’s £15k-a-week terms.
Celtic want Hart to be their first-choice until his deal expires, at which point Oluwayemi can take over the role. While in the three in-between years, see the 18-year-old prospect prove himself as the undisputed number two at Parkhead.
The Hoops would like Oluwayemi to possibly challenge Hart sooner than 2024, as parts of his game suit Ange Postecoglou. The Australian also rates the Nigeria-English talent highly, after John Kennedy highlighted his potential early into the Bhoys boss’ tenure.
Kennedy admired how good Oluwayemi’s distribution was and how comfortable he is with the ball during his time as interim Celtic manager, so frequently included him in training.
Oluwayemi has also impressed some senior Celtic players with his efforts during training sessions. His composure and calmness in goal has especially stood out to the Hoops squad.
Should Postecoglou hand Oluwayemi his Celtic debut soon?
But while Oluwayemi has impressed some Celtic players and staff in training, the teenager is still waiting for his debut. And his bow under Postecoglou may still be a little way off yet.
Postecoglou did name Oluwayemi on the bench for Celtic’s Europa League group stage win away to Ferencvaros, however. Favouring the former Spurs prospect over Vasilis Barkas.
The Bhoys’ 3-2 win at the Groupama Arena was the first occasion he had featured in a first-team matchday squad. While progressing in the England youth set-up, with his Under-19s debut last month. He had already featured for the Young Lions at U16, 17, and 18s levels.
