Yesterday, the Premier League announced their nominees for the 2021/22 Premier League Young Player of the Season award, where Tyrick Mitchell was named.
The Crystal Palace defender – who is a target for Tottenham and Newcastle – has enjoyed a superb season under Patrick Vieira in 2021/22.

Mitchell has made 38 appearances in all competitions, providing two assists, while he also earned two England caps as a result of his fine efforts.
What’s the story?
Well, the 22-year-old has already been named Young Player of the Season by Crystal Palace, and he could now add to that award.
Alongside Mitchell on the Premier League’s list of nominees is Conor Gallagher, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Aaron Ramsdale and Mason Mount.

Those are some stellar names, so the Crystal Palace No.3 – who Jack Grealish called “brilliant” – will surely struggle to win the award, as good as he is.
His nomination comes after some outlets revealed that both Antonio Conte and Eddie Howe are monitoring the left-back.
Elsewhere, Manchester City are also said to be interested in Mitchell.
Tottenham & Newcastle target hard done by
Hopefully one day, the Premier League will make an amendment to this award, as in its current format, it doesn’t make much sense.
As it stands, the award recognises the best Under-23 player from the Premier League campaign.
However, the likes of Rice, Foden, Alexander-Arnold and Mount are established Premier League stars who almost feel like senior figures, as they’ve been around so often.

In our view, the award should be for Under-21 players only, or for impressive debut campaigns in the Premier League from youngsters.
Of course, Mitchell is 22, but having burst onto the scene almost out of nowhere, the award feels far more appropriate for someone like him.
For example, Alexander-Arnold is also up for the Premier League Player of the Season award, so he’s clearly outgrown his status as a rookie.
Regardless of who wins this year, the Premier League must make amendments.
