Speaking on West Ham’s YouTube channel, Mark Noble has named Dimitri Payet as the best player he’s ever worked with at West Ham United.

The West Ham captain is retiring at the end of the month, and he’s been reflecting on his career with the Hammers.

Noble has played with some truly exceptional players during his time at West Ham, from Declan Rice to Carlos Tevez, but according to the Englishman, Payet was the best he saw in his 18 years at West Ham.

What’s been said?

Noble was asked to name the best player he’s played with.

“I think Dimi for that season was just unplayable at times, for how good he was for that season and a half, he was phenomenal, technically phenomenal, the free-kicks, the goals he scored, when I’d watch him in training I’d think ‘how are you not at Real Madrid or Barca’, he was technically that good, above anyone else, so it would have to be him,” Noble said.

Burned bright

They say that the candle that burns twice as bright burns for half as long, and sadly, that was the case for Payet at West Ham.

For a year and a half, West Ham had a truly world-class player on their hands with Payet, he was bamboozling every defence in the Premier League and carrying the Hammers to the brink of Champions League qualification.

However, Payet quickly began to feel that he’d outgrown the club and just 18 months after his arrival, he was gone.

Payet may have only played 48 league games for West Ham, but he made one hell of an impact during that time.
